Susan Anderson

     Director, City of Portland, Office of Sustainable 

      Development

Susan Anderson is Director of the City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development (OSD) -- a municipal agency working to ensure the environmental and economic health and prosperity of Portland’s neighborhoods and businesses. OSD is responsible for city wide solid waste collection and recycling, energy conservation, renewable energy resources, sustainable construction practices, utility regulatory issues and a variety of environmental programs. OSD is the lead agency for implementing Portland’s Local Action Plan on Global Warming -- A local plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 10 percent by 2010.

Over the years, Susan has worked with more than 30 communities to promote resource efficiency, the use of renewable resources and sustainable practices in commercial facilities, housing, transportation, land use planning and economic development.

Prior to her work with the City of Portland, Susan was Director of an environmental consulting firm. She also held positions with the Oregon Department of Energy, was an environmental land use planner and a public relations professional.  She holds undergraduate and advanced degrees in Economics, Environmental Science and Urban and Regional Planning.

John Echlin
President of the Board
 
Principal, SERA Architects

          

John Echlin is a Design Principal with SERA Architects in Portland , Oregon . He is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and UCLA, and has over 25 years experience in the US and Europe in urban planning and architecture with a special interest in environmentally responsive design.

A frequent speaker on sustainable design, John is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional and has recently completed 2 LEED registered projects. He is a former member of the City of Portland and Mulnomah County joint Sustainable Development Commission and was active on the Green Building and Public-Health Sub-committees. John also serves on the Board of Oregon Natural Step Network, and is engaged with a Construction Industry Peer Learning Group that is developing guidelines for fully-sustainable buildings.

Christine Ervin

           President & CEO, Christine Ervin/Co.

As the President and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council, Christine Ervin led its growth from 200 members and three staff in 1999 to become a highly influential coalition of nearly 5,000 companies and organizations, 50 staff, and 70 local chapters and affiliates. She is widely credited for being one of major forces behind the adoption of green building practices across the U.S.

Ervin was appointed by President Clinton in 1993 to serve as Assistant Secretary of Energy, where she focused on clean energy technologies affecting the transportation, building, utility and industrial sectors. Initiatives included the EPA-DOE ENERGY STAR partnership, Million Solar Roofs, and the President's Climate Change Technology effort. Ervin also directed the Oregon Department of Energy, led the Oregon Governor's task force on livable communities, oversaw budget policy for the State of Missouri , and conducted policy analyses at The Conservation Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund.

Ervin is currently writing a book on the role of market-based programs in environmental policy. She is a frequent speaker, consults with companies and nonprofit organizations, and serves on numerous advisory boards.

 

Thor Hinckley

           Renewable Power Manager, Portland General Electric

Renewable Energy, Thor manages the nation’s leading Green Power Program at Portland General Electric. Thor also developed the nations fastest selling renewable energy program, Renewable Futuresm and over see’s the Healthy Habitatsm donation program with The Nature Conservancy. Thor’s leadership in business sustainability includes development of one of the nations leading renewable power program for medium to large business, Clean Windsm . Purchasers include Intel, American Honda Motors, Toyota Motors, Epson and other Oregon businesses.

 

Sustainability, professional activities include serving as board member of the Oregon Natural Step Network, one of the leading sustainability NGO’s in the U.S. , and Chairman of the Board for the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center . Thor has a B.A from Roosevelt University in Chicago , IL and an MBA from Marylhurst University in OR. Thor’s professionally activities include serving Renewable Advisory Council for the Oregon Energy Trust and as a former Commissioner for the Portland Sustainable Development Commission.

 

Tom Kelly
President, Neil Kelly Co.

Tom is President of Neil Kelly Design/Build in Portland, Oregon. Neil Kelly is a remodeling and new home firm involved in all aspects of home construction. Tom grew up in the business, starting in high school as a laborer/truck driver. He attended the University of Oregon, majoring in Business and spent four months in Washington D. C., working for representative Les Au Coin.

Tom joined the management team at Neil Kelly in 1976 as Production Manager and was made President in 1979.

Tom is currently on the board of directors of the Columbia River Keepers and Co-chair of the Camp Collins Rotary Centennial Project Capital Campaign.

Tom lives in a floating home on the Columbia River with his wife Barbara and their two sons, Devin (21) and Garret (14). Neil Kelly Design/Build is a 57-year old firm. The firm is a 1996 winner of the National Association of Homebuilder's National Remodeling Quality Award and has been named one of Oregon's best 100 companies to work for five years running, also a 1997 winner of the Portland Chamber of Commerce "Top 10" Growth Award. In 1998 Neil Kelly Company was the winner of the Better Business Bureau Integrity Award. The company also received the 1999 National Torch Award from the Better Business Bureau (the first company on the West Coast to receive this prestigious award).

Gary Meddaugh
President and CEO, Housing Northwest

Gary L. Meddaugh is the President and CEO of Housing Northwest. ousing Northwest is a non-profit company that owns and manages housing for college students in Portland and Bend, Oregon.

In providing management services for over 1,500 beds of apartment and residence hall housing, Housing Northwest provides all maintenance, administrative and housekeeping services, as well as residence life operations for all facilities.

Gary has been President and CEO since 1989. Prior to joining Housing Northwest, Gary managed camps and conference centers for the YMCA and the United Methodist Church in Oregon and Rhode Island. His work in social services was preceded by his employment at International Business Machines Corporation as Manager of Financial Planning in Huntsville, Alabama and Boca Raton, Florida.

Gary is a graduate of Brown University and attended Harvard Divinity School. His current community involvement includes serving on the Board of Directors of the Oregon Natural Step Network. Gary and his wife Tricia Harding live in Redmond, Oregon.

Susan Sokol Blosser
Vice-President of the Board
 
Owner and President, Sokol Blosser Winery

Susan Sokol Blosser is owner and President of Sokol Blosser Winery, Dundee, Oregon. She and Bill Blosser were early pioneers of the Oregon wine industry, clearing the land and planting their first vines in 1971. Today Sokol Blosser is one of the most respected and best known of the Oregon wineries, with national and international distribution. Wines produced include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, a unique blend of nine white varietals, called Evolution, and a red blend, Meditrina, named for the Roman goddess of wine and health.
Sokol Blosser is known for its commitment to the environment and is farms organically. In December 2002, Sokol Blosser became the first winery in the world to receive the U.S. Green Building Council's prestigious LEED certification for its new underground barrel cellar.

Susan is orginally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Reed College. Her professional and community activities (past and present) include: eight years on the Dayton School Board; a founder and board member of the International Pinot Noir Celebration; a founder of the Oregon Chapter of Women for WineSense; an officer of the Oregon Wine Advisory Board; a trustee of Marylhurst College; a founder and board member of the Oregon Chapter of Business for Social Responsibility; a director of the Oregon Environmental Council; a director of the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry; a member of the Key Bank Oregon District Advisory Board; a member of the Oregon Natural Step Board; and a member of the Oregon Women's Forum. In 2004, Susan received an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service from the University of Portland.

 

Nancy Stueber
President, Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI)
 

Nancy Stueber is the president of the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), and has served in this capacity since 2000. She has led the development of the organization’s strategic plan and focused the organization on performance measures. She joined OMSI in 1981 as a manager of community events and temporary exhibits, and during her time at OMSI has served as the vice president of Exhibits, chief operating officer and interim president. She developed and implemented the exhibits master plan for the new 250,000 sq. ft. facility, built an internationally recognized exhibitions program within the museum that produced more than 25 traveling exhibitions, which are touring the U.S. and Europe.

Nancy graduated with honors from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS degree in environmental biology and terrestrial ecology, with graduate work in ecology and management. She and her husband, Dan, moved to Portland in 1981.

Nancy has a passion for sharing science and is actively involved with community partnerships and organizations devoted to improving access to educational opportunities for all. She advocates a sustainable business model that measures effectiveness to a “triple-bottom-line,” considering financial, social, and environmental impacts of business decisions.

Nancy serves as past board chair for the Portland Oregon Visitors Association, board vice president of the Association of Science-Technology Centers, and a board member of the Portland Streetcar, Inc. and the Oregon Natural Step Network. She is a member of the Oregon Women’s Forum and the American Association of Museums.

 

Dennis J. Wilde
Senior Project Manager, Gerding Edlen Development Company

Mr. Wilde has been active in construction and real estate development since 1967. He has extensive construction and design management experience. Prior to joining GED as a senior project manager, Mr. Wilde was the vice president of a large regional construction company. He has had direct management experience with projects exceeding $100 million in direct construction cost. His responsibilities include feasibility studies, management of the pre-construction and construction process, tenant improvement coordination, and overall project management.

He is the Senior Project Manager for the complete renovation of the historic Fuller Company building in Portland's Pearl District which is now the world headquarters for Wieden & Kennedy. In addition to office space, this mixed-use project includes 32,000 sq. ft. of retail space and parking. Renovation of this six-story, 240,000 sq. ft. building began in April 1997 and was completed in September 1999. It is registered as a historic structure and was rehabilitated in accordance with the National Park Service's Historic Preservation program.

Mr. Wilde is currently involved in other projects in Portland's Pearl District and is also managing over $250 million in projects in the South Waterfront.

In addition to his construction background, Mr. Wilde has more than twenty years of experience in urban planning and design. His education includes master's degrees in both city planning and architecture from the University of Pennsylvania . Mr. Wilde is also active as the president of the board of Oregon Natural Step Network, is on the Board of Directors, Cascadia Chapter, US Green Building Council and is on the Board of Directors of Caldera, an arts and environment educational foundation for at risk youth.

 

Justin Yuen
President, fmyi [for my innovation]

Justin is President of fmyi [for my innovation] in Portland, Oregon. fmyi is an international software development firm whose product is an easy to use online collaboration system which enables groups to store information, share it, and build community.

Before launching fmyi, Justin was a Senior Manager in Corporate Sustainable Development at Nike, Inc. His accomplishments included creating innovative organizational change programs, rolling out collaboration tools, building the business case for sustainability, and managing global employee corporate responsibility training. Prior to that, Justin was Nike's head of Quality in Footwear Product Marketing for the Europe/Middle East/Africa region based in the Netherlands.

Justin is originally from Princeton, New Jersey, and has a degree in International Studies from The Johns Hopkins University. His current community involvement includes serving on the City of Portland/Multnomah County's Sustainable Development Commission, and the Advisory Boards of Portland State University's Implementing Sustainability Program and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. He also was on the Advisory Board of the University of Michigan's Erb Institute For Global Sustainable Business, and has spoken at conferences across the country and around the world.
