The
City of Eugene recently recognized Organically Grown Company
(OGC) with the “Bold Steps toward Sustainability”
award. The Bold Steps toward Sustainability program honors
Eugene based businesses that make decisions based upon the
triple bottom line. OGC is the largest organic produce distributor
in the Pacific Northwest.

OGC
received the award based upon its systemic approach to sustainability,
starting with its adoption of a new mission statement that
incorporates sustainability as a central focus. In addition
OGC has hired a sustainability coordinator, appointed a sustainability
steering committee, is buying 100% wind power at both of its
facilities, and recycling, reusing or composting 89% of the
company’s byproducts. With respect to transportation,
the company is maximizing the efficiency of its delivery routes
and encouraging drivers to drive in a manner to avoid wasteful
fuel consumption. At the same time the company has switched
to biodiesel for its vehicle fleet.
OGC
is also a lead sponsor of the Food Trade Sustainability Leadership
Initiative. The purpose of this initiative is to make the
food trade more sustainable. The initiative has produced workshops,
three resource guides for the industry and is providing an
E-Newsletter to the Initiative’s members.
